Culturally Inappropriate Costumes
I believe that all cultures deserve to be respected and treated equally. Halloween is a day where people dress up in costumes that they think is absurd or horrendous. Some people are not aware of how their costumes may be hurtful or disrespectful towards a certain culture. All cultures have their traditional clothing pieces and that is something that holds a deep meaning to their hearts. I personally think that people dressing up as other cultures is simply out-of-line and rude because you can’t just mimic and say that you are part of that race if you are uneducated and have no background knowledge about it. During my previous Halloween experiences, I have personally never experienced an issue with my costume as a child. This is probably because I was not aware of the problems taking place around me as a kid or also just because people did not find my costume offensive.
Although wearing cultures as a costume can be hurtful, I think that not all people intend for it to be rude or disrespectful. Some people may be educated on the culture very well and might choose to bring pride and recognition towards a specific culture because they have interest in it. Some people may just find the culture fascinating and might want to express their thoughts towards it.
We can advise people to refrain from wearing inappropriate costumes by educating them on the history of that specific race. When people are not thoughtful or educated about a certain topic, they tend to go on and do what they think is okay without realizing the impact their actions have on other people. To stop people from wearing these inappropriate costumes, stores should also stop selling them and making them available to public. The less that these costumes are advertised, the fewer problems we will have in regard to these offensive costumes. People have already started to comment their feelings towards this issue and the more awareness that is brought to attention about this issue, the faster we will have a solution and insight about it.
I agree that all cultures should be respected no matter what circumstance and Halloween is no exception to that. When you dress up as another culture, that should be your culture and you should respect it with lots of care because it is something that is very meaningful to others. I can see where you are coming from when you say that some people don't dress up to be disrespectful but rather because you are interested in that culture and could be proud of it. I like your suggestion on how to get people to stop wearing these costumes and I agree with what you said. I think that these costumes should be discontinued and more attention should be brought to this issue.
